Judgement, Rider-Waite-Smith
Major arcana

Judgement

Judgement represents an awareness that lets you answer a situation differently, when a call makes itself heard.

What the card shows

An angel sounds a trumpet in the sky, and figures rise out of their coffins. Arms lift towards the angel, and mountains close the background.

Its light

Information received with honesty lets you revise a position grown too narrow. What is recognised gets put in order, and the past stops weighing when it is named.

Its shadow

An awareness that changes no behaviour leaves the situation in place. Understanding and carrying on as before gives a clear conscience without shifting anything.

Notes on the symbolism

RWS. Arcana XX. The motif of the last call comes from the Apocalypse; Pamela Colman Smith adds a banner with a cross on the instrument of judgement.

What this card invites you to do

Listen to what becomes obvious, even if it upsets your plans. Update your decision with what you know now, then join the gesture to the word.

A card does not decide for you.
It shows you where to look.
