Strength, Rider-Waite-Smith
Major arcana

Strength

Strength acts through presence and patience. It does not remove the lion’s impulse, it holds it in a relationship rather than in a constraint.

What the card shows

Strength stands near the lion and gently opens its jaws, with no visible constraint. Above her head, the sign of infinity is drawn in two loops.

Its light

Gentleness gets what constraint misses. Holding a force without gripping lets the situation calm, and mastery works through presence rather than through the grip.

Its shadow

Restraint can smother what pushes. Treating every impulse as a danger cuts the drive, and patience held by pride turns into resentment.

Notes on the symbolism

RWS. Arcana VIII. Strength receives the same 8 lying on its side as the Magician, mark of a mastery obtained through gentleness rather than through the grip.
