The Mat, Tarot de Marseille
Major arcana

The Mat

The Mat opens a space of freedom, movement and the unknown. He moves ahead without controlling everything and leaves a frame grown too narrow to find exploration again.

What the card shows

The Mat walks on, his bundle on one shoulder and his staff on the other, with no marked path in front of him. All his momentum shows in the torso leaning forward, while an animal bites the bottom of his leg.

Its light

Fewer certainties, more availability. A new experience is taken on without a destination and without controlling everything: movement teaches what a plan ignores.

Its shadow

Without a foothold, freedom turns into scattering. You switch tracks at the first obstacle, and refusing every constraint is not choosing: escape dresses itself up as departure.

Notes on the symbolism

Symbolism TdM. The Mat. In Marseille symbolism he carries no number: he stays outside the sequence of the twenty-one major arcana, and some publishers place him last in the deck.

What this card invites you to do

Move without letting go of your discernment. Sort what you carry, take a step towards what draws you: a departure is settled in action, not in waiting.

A card does not decide for you.
It shows you where to look.
