The Lover, Tarot de Marseille
Major arcana

The Lover

The Lover stands for choice, attraction, values and the tension of the moment when you have to take a stand. The card does not speak only of love.

What the card shows

The Lover stands between two figures, one on each side of him. Above his head, a winged Cupid bends his bow, and the arrow is already aimed at one of the two.

Its light

Naming what matters pulls you out of hesitation: once the criteria are set, the decision stands and a direction emerges. The choice becomes clear as soon as it is spoken.

Its shadow

Staying between several options gives the illusion of keeping everything. Not choosing is still a choice: others decide or grow tired, and hesitation protects your comfort.

Notes on the symbolism

Symbolism TdM. The Lover. The motif comes from the Renaissance, when the choice of a path engaged a whole life, and card VI is the only one to carry a winged god.

What this card invites you to do

Write your criteria down before you decide, and read them back. Let neither pressure nor comfort choose in your place or put the decision back to later.

A card does not decide for you.
It shows you where to look.
