The Four of Cups looks for a form of emotional stability. It can stand for a need for rest, for recentring or for inner protection.
The four cups rest in pairs, quite upright, and a leafy stem fills the space left free at the centre. The whole stays closed, no chalice leans towards the others.
A chosen time of withdrawal returns you to your own needs, and you come back to others with a clearer relation to what you really want.
Your protection closes into refusal: you push aside what is held out to you before examining it, and you take that refusal for a judgement. What you push aside, you do not look at.
Symbolism TdM. Fourth of the decade, the four opens the first closed figure of the count, obtained by doubling the pair, while the three stays open.
Take some distance when it does you good, then check that it stays a choice and not an installed escape.
